Discover the Common Core State (CCSS) standards for English language arts, and gain confidence in applying them to the K-5 classroom. In this course you'll explore the basic elements of the standards—strands, anchor standards, and grade articulations—and you'll see how they relate to each other. You'll be empowered to speak knowledgeably with parents, peers, and the community. And, most importantly, you'll learn how to prepare even the youngest students for eventual college and career.
We'll explore the four English language strands—reading, writing, speaking and listening, and language—outlining the goals that students will aim for in each of those areas. We'll also examine how teaching literature gives students the opportunity to explore language, and consider the impact of a school-wide literacy plan. We'll discuss the roles of technology, homework, curricula, and assessments in the classroom. And you'll be inspired by loads of easy-to-use, practical examples of CCSS-aligned lessons that you can use with your own students.
By the end of the course, you'll be confident in your ability to employ the standards in your classroom and in your school. You'll be ready to utilize the best of what's new, keep the best of what you've already got, and enjoy being a great 21st-century teacher!

Studies prove, time and again, that college-educated workers earn more than those with only a high school qualification. College graduates often enjoy additional benefits, including greater job opportunities and promotions. Though the proof for greater earning potential exists, some might wonder whether the cost of the education warrants the overall expense in the long run.
College Graduate vs. Non-Graduate Earnings
The National Centre for Education Statistics (NCES) analyses employee earnings data biennially, according to education level. Findings indicate that workers with a qualification earn significantly more than those without. Since the mid-1980s, education has played a large part in potential wages, with bachelor's degree holders taking home an average of 66% more than those with only a high school diploma do. While college-educated workers' wages have increased over the past two decades, those with only a high school education have seen decreases in annual salaries in the same time period (nces.ed.gov).
